Art on the cheap

Suitable for: elementary school, secondary school

Stálá sbírka

Classical sculptures as we know them are chiseled and carved out of stone, marble or made of bronze. To paint a picture, artists used to use expensive colours and other precious art materials such as gold leaf or lapis lazuli. However, it is no surprise that there are many works of art in museums of modern art, which are made with unusual techniques. Tough times forced the artists to use cheap materials. Magdalena Abakanowicz, for example, became famous for her sack cloth figures; Karel Nepraš made the sculptural group The Family out of gardening tools while Věra Janoušková collected enamel pots from lake.

During the workshop the students will find out how it is possible to make art even from objects of everyday use.
